Webinar tonight and next Tuesday on Managing Forages during Drought. Good registration numbers from across NNY, NYS and beyond.

Drought conditions continue and are most severe in St. Lawrence and Clinton Counties where rains have missed.

Western Bean Cutworm moth trapping is underway and trap catches will be at peak this week. We will put out some info on moth numbers and scouting guidance.

Questions coming in have mostly been drought related – failed spring seedings, worries about low forage yields and inventories this season, how to patch up brown, crispy pastures, etc.

CROPS & SOIL MANAGEMENT

Drought conditions continue across the NNY region with hopes for some weekend relief in the form of rains. All of NYS is now categorized as at least ‘D0 Abnormally Dry’ by NOAA and USDA. Portions of Jefferson and Oneida Counties have been upgraded to a ‘D1 Moderate Drought’ with portions of Franklin, Clinton and Essex continuing to be categorized as a D1 as well. A large area in St. Lawrence County has been moved to a ‘D2 Severe Drought’ category and observations on the ground support this. Corn has been showing signs of stress for weeks with some fields now showing patchy discoloration as well. Soybeans in these dry areas remain very small. Hay yields have been well below normal for 2 ^nd cutting.

Alfalfa is expressing signs of drought-induced nutrient deficiencies all across this region. Potato Leafhoppers have been serious and damaging in lower parts of NYS for the past few weeks but they have not yet been widespread in NNY. Some have been found in Jefferson/Lewis areas but sweeps were conducted last week across Franklin and Clinton Counties without detecting any PLH.
