The Northern Adirondack Chapter of The NY Forest Owners Assoc. is hosting a woods’ walk of Spencer Thew’s 660-ac “Rocky Top” forest.
Spencer purchased this property in 1991 after it was very heavily harvested by the previous owner. You will see regeneration on a 40-yr. old site that is now stocked with nice pole- and young saw-timber. See a naturally seeded Christmas Tree plantation as well as a repurposed commercial sawmill that has been repurposed to support a grade-stake business and other products which are marketed in the Northeast. Finally, Spencer can offer insight into managing a vacation destination for sled-dog mushers and enthusiasts (Call of the Wild Sled Dog Tours). He has used the many miles of his own and neighboring forest lands to train his sled dogs for distance racing, including the Iditarod sled-dog race.
Please pack lunch, bring a friend, and enjoy a day afield. Snacks and water will be provided. We will traverse miles of woods roads or improved gravel roads by utilizing ATV’s and UTV’s. Please let us know if you will be bringing a machine and how many it seats. There will be room for a few participants for sure. There is a lot to discover.
There will be handouts and several door prizes. We look forward to seeing you there!
